The Coalition for Permanent Standard Time celebrates the introduction of the bipartisan Sunshine for Our Kids Act by Representatives Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) and Pat Harrigan (R-NC), a meaningful step toward ending the twice-yearly clock change and restoring permanent standard time nationwide.
“This legislation recognizes what the Coalition has long advocated for: standard time best aligns our clocks with the sun, supports healthy sleep, and promotes safer mornings for children, families, workers, and commuters”, states Dr. Karin Johnson, Co-Chair of the Coalition.
For too long, Americans have been forced to adjust to disruptive seasonal time changes or face proposals that would lock the nation into permanent daylight saving time, which would delay essential morning light and make winter mornings darker for millions of students and families. Permanent standard time is the healthier, safer, and more practical solution because it keeps daily schedules more closely aligned with natural light.
The Coalition thanks Reps. Scanlon and Harrigan for their leadership and urges Congress to advance the Sunshine for Our Kids Act. Ending clock changes should not come at the expense of public health and safety. By choosing permanent standard time, Congress can adopt a time policy that supports sleep, protects morning safety, and works better for communities across the country.
